Photos By the Numbers

Why are we so overwhelmed by our photo collections?

Back when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, my parents would develop a roll of film every so often - maybe only a few times a year. Now, I’m taking a photo almost every day! If it’s a special occasion—like a vacation, birthday, or holiday—we will take tens or hundreds of photos! No wonder we’re overwhelmed.

The other thing I often think about is how often I’m able to actually go back an enjoy those photos. Often there are too many to scroll back through in order to enjoy them!

Here are a few more interesting photo statistics:

  • More than 40 billion photos have been shared on Instagram as of 2021

  • 95 million photos and videos are shared on Instagram per day

  • 350 Million photos are uploaded on Facebook every day

  • 1.81 trillion photos are taken worldwide per year

  • Every minute, humans take more photos than existed in total 150 years ago

  • 57,000 photos are taken per second

  • 5 billion photos are taken per day

  • By 2030, over 2.3 trillion photos will be taken every year

  • 92.5% of photos are taken with smartphones, and only 7% with cameras

  • 1826 marks the first photograph ever taken (View from the Window in Le Gras)

  • 1861 introduced color photos

  • 2100 is the average number of photos on a smartphone (2023)
